The personal cost of a political conflict
Families and friends watched as the final shovels of dirt fell on the graves of slain soldiers in San Rafael del Norte, a mountain village approximately 100 miles north of Managua.

The following day a force of contra guerrillas - in an attack deep into Nicaraguan territory -- laid siege to the village, lobbing in what the Sandinista army said was 80mm mortar fire from the surrounding hills and killing nine civilians and soldiers.
