President Reagan had told Americans that the Sandinistas were creating a totalitarian state with spies on every street corner. The reality: volunteers kept an eye on the neighborhoods because all the police had been Somosistas. The only one we ever found was this guy, and he was asleep.
After I took this picture I took a step back and stepped into an open manhole - the covers had been removed because they were stamped with the deposed Somoza's name. I literally almost broke my ass. |
